Onboard Food Sales

Role: Design lead (Lead a team of 2 designers)

OBJECTIVE

  • Evaluate and redefine food cart inventory process

  • Revamp previously designed base app

  • Identify ways to surprise and delight passengers onboard

In the following overview, I focus on smaller chunks of the bigger problem to highlight some of the thinking I brought to the table.

1. APP AUDIT & PROCESS FLOW ANALYSIS

The journey began with an assessment of heuristics of the app and testing the process flow with flight attendants. I validated how the previously designed flow fit in with the flight attendants’ current workflow and identified enhancements. Additionally, I also investigated how flight attendants’ screen time can be reduced so they can focus on passenger service. This meant I led discussions with data architects & lead engineers to understand what data sets we have available and how we can aid screen time reduction by redefining the data sets.

2. DEFINING NEW INTERACTION PATTERNS

After a thorough analysis of the gap in process, my team designers and I started off by sketching potential interaction patterns. Following are some scenarios that we were iterating on:

3. Visual Design

During my user testing sessions, I identified that flight attendants were often interacting with food sales in low light settings. So, as my team was considering the color palette, I spearheaded the exploration of dark mode version for the app. I quickly tried to validate this exploration by jumping on a call with a flight attendant for UI review and learnt that users of certain age groups preferred light mode over dark mode. So, I led conversations with my technical team to make light mode & dark mode available to users as an app preference setting. Below are some explorations:

HI FIDELITY SCREENS

Here is jumping right to the climax!

The final product is a mobile app named Onboard Food Sales, that is currently in use by flight attendants in major airlines across the world. Onboard Food Sales, has significantly reduced the time it takes flight attendants to prep food carts before & after flight. Flight attendants may also surprise passengers by knowing their food and beverage preferences. Most importantly, through a new food inventory process, flight routes with passengers who prefer pizza will have pizza in stock!
